These Bitter Years by ~diimmortales:icondiimmortales:

for Maura

I want to turn off sex
curl it up into a little ball
hidden away on my insides
where everything goes right

I want to rewind every kiss
tape over it with a conversation
intelligent, random, beautiful
until the sun comes up

I want to forget the things I’ve learned
return to what I’ve forgotten
or lost in this long, strange
maze of years

Were we ever really that young
dreaming about the unknown
tucked away in our blanket forts
with our flashlights and silly plans

We knew that each person hid
something wonderful, intriguing
stories to uncover, discover
new things to make part of our own

I want my whimsy back
because I can’t stand this vague
sense of failure, this gloaming period
mind-stifling, indefinite

Author's Comments

After a long, nostalgic conversation, I made a comment resembling the first stanza, and my friend said, "Turn that into a poem, right now." So I did.
